100 Days of The Sleeping Beauty

Day 76: Brenda and Victor’s tour blog - props

In The Sleeping Beauty, we have several props that us dancers are responsible for. In the first photo (left), we can see the gifts which are offered by the fairies to Aurora’s parents which represent wisdom, grace, angelic temperament, song and beauty.

For those of you who have seen the ballet already and were wondering what the Aunts are doing in the Prologue, well here’s an image of the real knitting and tapestry work the aunts do on stage while watching the fairies dance for baby Aurora (middle).

The image on the right shows the bouquet of flowers and the swords the Princes have to hand in before joining Aurora’s 16th birthday celebrations as anything sharp is prohibited.

Props are a very important asset in any ballet. The props shown here are easy to handle, but the dancers who play Carabosse’s mutant daughters say that the Cactus Aurora pricks here finger on can be a very tough item to control! Raked stages make the job even tougher.
